Event of the Month: Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

April 12, 2019

April may be the start of spring, but it is also the start of two weekends of music and art celebration that is Coachella! It is the most famous and profitable festival celebrating creativity in both music and art and showcases both established and emerging talent in both fields. Coachella is just one of the millions of events that Gravy analyzes to deliver its real-world consumer intelligence.

The start of Coachella goes back to a 1993 Pearl Jam performance hosted at the Empire Polo Club in California – a boycott of venues controlled by Ticketmaster. The success of that show proved that the location was capable of hosting large crowds and, in 1999, the inaugural Coachella Festival was born. With better amenities and atmosphere than competing festivals, and an accessible state-side location, Coachella was off to a promising start.

Event of the Month: Coachella

Subsequent years saw the emerging festival change in scope from a single-day event, to the two consecutive, three-day weekend event Coachella is today. The festival hosts the best in music entertainment: long-established singers and bands, nostalgic reunion performances, and the top emerging artists from around the world. Coachella also features a wide variety of mixed media visual and installation art. Many of the art installations are interactive, providing a new form of entertainment for festival attendees and exposure to new artists. Coachella now regularly rents art installments and, even commissions works for the festival, many of which have been featured at Art Basel.

As the size and scope of Coachella has increased, so has  their commitment to sustainability and the environment. Coachella has partnered with Global Inheritance to implement environmentally-friendly initiatives that encourage festival goers and artists to lend a hand. “TRASHed :: Art of Recycling” challenges local artists to design and decorate the recycle bins located throughout the festival grounds. “Carpoolchella” rewards attendees who carpool to the festival in groups of four or more with a chance to with free VIP passes for life. Smaller initiatives include a 10-for-1 program where attendees can collect 10 empty water bottles and exchange them for a free full one, as well as interactive “energy playgrounds’ that charge phones and electronic devices. Camping also helps to reduce the festival’s carbon footprint with free re-entry to the festival from the campgrounds, recreational vehicle parking, and parking next to your tent.
