Daytona Beach, Florida | February 17, 2019
February isn’t just for Valentine’s Day, it’s also when “The Great American Race” happens! Gather your family, friends and tailgating supplies and head on over to Daytona Beach, Florida for the Daytona 500. The Daytona 500 is just one of the millions of events that Gravy analyzes to deliver its real-world consumer intelligence.
The Daytona 500 was first run in 1959, coinciding with the speedway’s opening. Since 1982, it’s been the official opening-season race for the NASCAR Cup Series. The inaugural race was won by racing legend Lee Petty – but only after tying with Johnny Beauchamp, who was initially proclaimed the winner. After three days pouring over photos and newsreels of the finish (ahead of actual “photo finish” technology), Petty was awarded the win.
The 61st running of the Daytona 500 will be held February 17, 2019 and will feature the country’s top race car drivers competing for the biggest purse of the racing season. The race consists of 200 laps around a 2.5 mile “tri-oval” shaped track, covering a total 500 miles. Fans have always been an integral part of the Daytona 500: their passion and devotion to their teams and drivers provides valuable feedback and creates a climate of celebration and inclusion – one of the core missions for the Daytona family.
Daytona is also known for its charitable endeavors. Partnering with schools, hospitals and communities around Florida, the Daytona 500 provides entertainment experiences and monetary support for underprivileged and sick children. Race-themed pediatric hospital units, Make-A-Wish Foundation events, educational grants and employee advancement programs are just of few of the initiatives of the International Speedway Corporation. They also spearhead programs in support of breast cancer research, reading achievement, victims of 9/11 and homeless outreach. Collectively, these programs make the Daytona 500 a philanthropic leader in the sports community.
