Impact of Boeing 737 Max Grounding on U.S. Airports

After the tragedies of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashes, the FAA ordered all Boeing 737 Max planes to be grounded on March 13, 2019. Many flights were impacted (either canceled or reassigned) as a result of the Boeing 737 Max Grounding. 

To understand the 2019 grounding’s impact on the airport industry, we analyzed consumer foot traffic at leading airports nationwide.

Consumers included in this analysis visited an airport between Mar 1, 2019 and Jun 15, 2019 and/or between Mar 1, 2018 and Aug 31, 2018.

Average dwell time was slightly higher in March 2019, when the Boeing 737 Max was first taken out of service.
